What did it take to get into DSDE8?
Due to an unexpectedly eventful summer, this one is a little late! As I type DSDE8 are hard at work on a particularly interesting client project, involving lots of spatial data, the results of which have real-world physical implications in a large German city. Very cool, I'm actually a bit jealous of them...!
Whilst they work hard, let's take a look back to over 12 weeks ago, and see what it took for them to join their cohort, leading them to their hard but effective team-work today.

When you make it to the final interviews, there are four possible outcomes,
three of which are positive:
1. You get offered a spot in the cohort you are interviewing for.
2. You get offered a spot in a future cohort.
3. You get asked back for the final interviews for the next cohort.
4. You are able to apply again, but keep in mind we expect to see improvement

DS19 is finishing up their third week of training and DS20 final interviews are
just two weeks away. It’s a good time for us to reflect back on DS19 and see
what each of them created to get them into The Data School.
As you look at these, you might notice the data sets are different. Many of them
joined us at different times. Some were offered positions when interviewing for
prior cohorts. Six of them had applied to a previous cohort and didn’t get in.

times. Some were offered positions when interviewing for prior cohorts. At least
five of them had applied once before and didn’t get in. They went off to

What should you take from this? Apply early. You get more time to iterate on
your application and you have the potential to be offered

What did it take to get into DS17?
DS18 interviews are coming up next week, so I wanted to look back at what it
took to get into DS17. We had another record number of applications for DS18,
with nearly 200 candidates submitting their work. The benefits of our
application is the diversity of candidates. In fact, we have yet another cohort
with more women than men. Few tech companies can compete with our level of
gender diversity.
Don’t let this stop you from applying though. Many of the people in each cohort
now have been through

What did it take to get into DS16?
As we approach yet another deadline for applications (they’re coming thick and
fast these days), I wanted to look back at what it took to get into DS16. Things
are getting a bit crazy at DS HQ as the applications are coming at us incredible
fast at incredible volume. We had a record 150 applications for DS15! To put
that into context, the previous record number of applications was 105 for DS11.
Don’t let the volume discourage you though. Everyone that applies learns A LOT

What did it take to get into DS15?
We had whopping 68 applications for DS15! They’re now a couple of months into
their training, so it’s about time I show what they created to get into the DS.
Let’s take a look at DS15’s applications.
As you look at these, you might notice the data sets are different. Why?
* Some of them applied early enough and showed enough promise that we brought
them in for an early interview.
* Some were finalists from previous cohorts, e.g., DS14, and were offered a
spot in DS15.
* Some were offe

What did it take to get into DS10?
It’s final interview day for DS11…20 interviews for two spots. I figured what
better way to kick off the day than to show everyone what it took to get into
DS10. To show the variety that we get, for some of them I’ve chosen one of their
applications and for some others I’ve chosen their viz from their final
interviews. Either way, you’ll see that people can create some really good work
if they have a deep desire and passion for this work.

thought it would be useful to see what it took for DS5 to get into The Data

something in Tableau Public. This can be with any data set they want. The point
is that it proves a great filter for passion, which is ultimately what we’re
hiring for. If you send us a CV, we’ll send it right back and tell you to create

What did it take to get into DS4?
Our next cohort of The Data School begins their training in early October. I
thought I’d share a bit of insight into their final interviews. First, let me
explain how the interview process works. It’s a two-part interview, with one
candidate in each of the two interviews, then they swap spots:
1. A more “typical” interview: We look for people that believe in the mission
of the Data School, believe in our company mission, will fit into our
company culture, show enthusiasm for their work
