Shortcuts can save a lot of time when working in Tableau, cutting down on repetitive dragging and clicking so you can focus on the actual analysis. Here are 10 shortcuts I've found particularly useful, from quick worksheet tricks to some dashboard-specific ones, including one right at the end that's saved me hours of formatting time.
Worksheet Shortcuts
1. Resize your view (Ctrl + Arrow keys)
Instead of manually dragging cell sizes, just hit Ctrl and an arrow key. Up and down make your view taller or shorter, left and right make it wider or narrower. It's a direct shortcut into the cell size section of your formatting panel, much faster than fiddling with the mouse.
2. Swap rows and columns (Ctrl + W)
If you've built a table with a load of pills on both shelves, Ctrl+W swaps your rows and columns instantly, saving you from dragging every single one across manually. A real time-saver on messier views.
3. Navigate between sheets (Ctrl + Tab / Ctrl + Shift + Tab)
Want to move between sheet tabs at the bottom without touching the mouse? Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab do exactly that. Handy for jumping around quickly, especially if you're working across a lot of sheets.
4. Make a view bigger or smaller (Ctrl + B / Ctrl + Shift + B)
Once you're on a sheet, a pie or donut chart is a great example, Ctrl+B and Ctrl+Shift+B make the whole view bigger or smaller. It gives you more visual real estate without messing with rows and columns, which is especially handy for chart types like these.
5. Bring up the sheet description (Ctrl + E)
Ctrl+E brings up the sheet description box. Perfect if you need to document what a sheet does in a hurry, especially useful before handing a workbook over to someone else and providing a handover.
They Work in Dashboards Too
All five of those shortcuts also work inside a dashboard, as long as you've got the sheet itself selected rather than the dashboard canvas. So you don't lose any of that speed just because you've moved into dashboard view.

6. Turn on gridlines (G)
Hit G to bring up gridlines on your dashboard. Great for making sure everything lines up and stays symmetrical, especially when you're placing floating elements or trying to keep spacing consistent.
7. Drop in a floating sheet (Hold Shift)
Hold Shift while dragging a sheet onto your dashboard, and it'll drop in as a floating object instead of tiled. Really useful if you're building a more custom, layered layout.
8. Toggle between Dashboard and Layout panes (T)
Press T to toggle between the Dashboard pane and the Layout pane. Instead of clicking back and forth at the top, this lets you flick between them instantly while you're fine-tuning positioning and sizing.
9. Bring up dashboard actions (Ctrl + Shift + D)
Ctrl+Shift+D brings up your dashboard actions menu directly, no need to go hunting through the top menu. Straight to where you set up your filters, highlights, or URL actions.
10. Edit sheet tooltips (Alt + W + O)
Saving the best till last, Alt, W, O brings up the sheet's tooltip settings. Trust me on this one: if you're formatting a big dashboard with lots of sheets, being able to jump straight into tooltip editing without hunting through menus will save you hours.
