How I Approached Creating the App: I wanted to generate an HTML report about a football player over a user-specified timeframe. Target users could be football scouts looking for quick player summaries. I also wanted the output structure to remain consistent to enable valid comparisons across different players.
Alteryx Process:
- Used Interface tools to pass user-inputted information into a Text Input tool.
- Formulated the input into a final URL to call the API.
- Used the Download, JSON Parse and Summarize tools to gather and structure the player information.
- Created a JSON schema using a Text Input tool (this could also have been done using a JSON Schema tool) and appended it to the single-row dataset.
- Referenced the player data in the AI Prompt tool using Gemini as the LLM provider. Key step: passed the JSON schema into the JSON Schema column for structured output.
- Applied RegEx to clean the output text.
- Used JSON Parse and Cross Tab tools to consolidate all data into standard columns within a single row.
- Added a Text Input tool containing the base HTML webpage template and appended it to the data stream.
- Used a Formula tool with multiple
REPLACEfunctions to substitute placeholder fields in the HTML template (Field1) with player-specific data. This step ensures consistent output formatting every time.
- Passed the final HTML into a Blob Convert tool, added a file-suffix formula to prevent overwriting previous files, and exported the report using a Blob Output tool.
My Alteryx Workflow:
Challenges:
- I struggled to extract numerical data from Wikipedia tables, which led to a lot of back-and-forth with different AI tools that often contradicted each other.
- Having no prior HTML experience, I had to rely heavily on Gemini and other LLMs to generate all the HTML code.
Colour Theme and Formatting: Building an HTML template worked really well for maintaining output consistency. In the future, I would like to offer multiple HTML templates so users can choose their preferred report layout.
