Dashboard Week Day 4: Working with backgroundimages, floating containers and transparent charts in tableau

by Viktoria Von Laer

Using an image as a background for the whole dashboard and placing the charts on it, looks always very stylish for me, but I never tried it until now- although it’s really  easy to do.

On your dashboard choose image and drag it on it. You have to make it floating so that it can cover the whole dashboard. You can either cut the image before using it, or you can change the size of the dashboard, so that the image fits.

Now drag the charts on the dashboard that you want to use. You have to make all of them floating as well, so that they can float above the image. When you want to change the order of the charts- meaning which one is above the other one, right-click on the little triangle of the chart and choose “floating order”. Here you can send your item further to the back or to the front.

But mostly, when using an image for the whole background, you want to have transparent charts. For this, go to your chart sheet. Right- click on it and choose “format”. Here you go to “shading” and choose none. Now your chart is transparent and you can see the background image behind it.
