Dashboard Week - Day 2 (The Cat Tracker)

by Sherina Mahtani

Today my heart was racing so fast mainly because my time management skills were horrendous. Couldn't make a decision about anything and was going down many many 'cat' holes today.

Today's task was using a dataset that tracks cats when theyre out of the house. I was really excited because I love animals and I had so many grand ideas of what it could be. However....

The day started with not knowing how exactly to combine the two datasets that I needed for my dashboard but no recognizable common field. It took the group a while to figure that one out. After that, I started to write my scope and questions down which were ambitious, to say the least. I wanted to do an analysis of the tracking of cats but not individually but in groups e.g. females vs males, time of day (morning, afternoon, night, late night) or hunters vs non hunters. This can be seen below in what I thought my dashboard would look like:

But because each cat had many timestamps, I couldn't figure out a way to show the group routes because there were so many. I wanted to incorpoate interactivity and was trying to do this until lunch. After that, I had to change course and make this dashboard static and go an infographic on the experiment instead.

I think the design aspect of my dashboard looks nice but I think I could've included a lot more information from the dataset and explored a lot more, however, time ran out.

So for Day 3:

  1. Plan my day better
  2. Don't wait too long and make a decision
  3. Ask for help if you're confused
  4. It is always good to have another brain to talk things through
