Time Flies
Since starting at The Information Lab’s Data School, time has absolutely flown by. The sheer number of impressions and experiences accompanying my workday has left a bit of chaos in my head. I guess that’s just what learning feels like! ;-)
Hello! Hello! Hello!
The initial nerves have settled, and the first week went by in a flash. With all the new online tools, the IT setup, and the outlook on the weeks ahead, there was hardly any time for quiet reflection. Every five minutes, colleagues dropped by to say “Hello!” And if that wasn't enough, we had the chance to introduce ourselves personally during several introductory rounds. The exchange was unexpectedly open and approachable, making us all feel very comfortable and leading to many happy hours together. And then, we dived straight into Data Analytics and Data Prep...
The Backlog is Growing
Since Day 3, we’ve been learning the finer details of data visualization and gaining deeper insights into the possibilities of Tableau. Data Viz 101, dashboard design, and data prep are on our daily agenda, and sometimes I feel like my head can't quite keep up because there is just so much to try out. The development opportunities are virtually endless, and my backlog—which I document using Notion—is growing steadily.
Project Time
Training takes up the bulk of our day, but Friday is Project Time. The specific challenge here is that we don’t just have to apply what we’ve learned, but also structure it ourselves. To finish all tasks by the 3:30 PM presentation, you have to weigh your options and make quick decisions, as time is tight. It feels a bit like being thrown into the deep end, but I’m confident we are well on our way to becoming time management pros. We receive so much positive and constructive feedback at eye level; it’s impossible not to feel lucky.
Friday projects are also a fantastic opportunity to practice presentations. I find myself asking:
- Did I introduce the topic well?
- Am I telling a story that engages the audience?
- Is there a good balance between images and text?
- Did I remember to show a small snippet of the dataset?
A good presentation relies on choosing the right aids. We use digital tools like Zoom-It to highlight content and deliberately guide the audience's gaze. This way, we learn not to wave the mouse cursor around like a sword but to give it a well-deserved break.
Meet the People
We regularly host internal events, from tournaments and "Lunch+Learns" to PowerPoint Karaoke. It’s a lot of fun and reflects a great, living corporate culture. From my previous jobs, I already knew how important a good atmosphere is to me. A positive environment is crucial for cohesion, joy, and productivity—something felt by our clients and guests who frequently visit the office.
I am already very grateful for the community here. The office conditions are simply fantastic. From nice chats with new colleagues in the large kitchen to quick table tennis breaks or a strong cup of coffee (really strong!), my well-being is well looked after. Plus, the location of The Information Lab in Hamburg Neustadt allows for lunch breaks in nearby cafés or a stroll through "Planten un Blomen."
The appreciative atmosphere among colleagues is wonderful. There’s even a focus on ensuring we take regular breaks during intense work phases. Our lovely People Team even provided us with food on Friday, which felt incredibly thoughtful. A big thank you for that—we almost forgot we were hungry! :-)
My Tip:
Notion is my go-to tool for managing my backlog. It allows me to save ideas and loose ends for later, keeping me receptive to the constant input from our trainers. It’s impossible to retain everything, and that’s okay. In fact, as future consultants, one of our core competencies will be keeping an eye on what’s important while remaining open to new requirements and ideas.
In that spirit: Have confidence that you will reach your destination after a wild journey.
Die Zeit rast
Seit dem dem Start bei der Data School von The Information Lab, ist die Zeit wie im Flug vergangen. Die Vielzahl der Eindrücke und Erlebnisse, die meinen Arbeitstag begleiten, haben ein kleines Chaos in meinem Kopf hinterlassen. Ich glaube, so fühlt sich lernen an. ;-)
Hallo! Hallo! Hallo!
Die erste Aufregung ist verflogen und die erste Woche verging wie im Fluge. Die vielen neuen Online-Tools, das IT-Setup und der Ausblick auf die kommenden Wochen ließ kaum Zeit für Ruhe und Reflektion. Alle 5 Minuten schauten Kollegen*innen bei uns vorbei, um “Hallo!” zu sagen. Und wem das noch nicht reichte, der hatte bei einer der vielen Vorstellungsrunden die Gelegenheit, sich persönlich vorzustellen. Der Austausch war dabei unerwartet so offen und nahbar, dass wir uns alle sehr wohl fühlten und viele freudige Stunden erlebten. Und dann ging es auch schon direkt los mit Data Analytics und Data Prep…
Der Backlog wächst
Seit Tag 3 lernen wir viele neue Details über Datenvisualisierung und gewinnen einen tieferen Einblick in die Möglichkeiten von Tableau. Data Viz 101, Dashboard-Design und Data Prep stehen auf unserer täglichen Agenda und ich habe manchmal das Gefühl, dass mein Kopf gar nicht mehr hinterherkommt, weil es einfach sooo viel zum ausprobieren gibt. Die eigenen Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten sind quasi endlos und mein Backlog, den ich mit Notion dokumentiere, wächst stetig an.
Project Time
Die Trainings machen bei uns den größten Teil des Tages aus. Am Freitag ist Project Time. Die besondere Herausforderung dabei ist, dass wir das neu gelernte nicht nur anwenden, sondern auch selbst strukturieren müssen. Um alle Aufgaben bis zur Präsentation um 15:30 Uhr zu erfüllen, muss man abwägen und Entscheidungen treffen, denn die Zeit ist knapp. Es fühlt sich ein bisschen an wie der Sprung ins kalte Wasser, aber ich bin zuversichtlich, dass wir auf dem besten Weg sind Profis im Zeitmanagement zu werden. Wir erhalten so viel positives und konstruktives Feedback auf Augenhöhe, dass man sich einfach nur glücklich schätzen kann.
Die Freitagsprojekte sind auch eine tolle Gelegenheit, um Präsentationen zu trainieren. Ich stelle mir Fragen wie: Leite ich gut in das Thema ein? Erzähle ich eine Story, die die Zuhörer abholt und ins Thema hineinfinden lässt? Wie ist die Balance aus Bild und Text? Und habe ich auch nicht vergessen, einen kleinen Ausschnitt des Datensets zu zeigen? Eine gute Präsi fußt auf der Wahl der richtigen Hilfsmittel und dabei bedienen wir uns angemessener digitaler Tools wie z. B. Zoom-It, um Inhalte hervorzuheben und den Blick des Publikums bewusst zu leiten. Auf die Weise lernen wir mit dem Mauszeiger nicht wie mit einem Degen wild herumzufuchteln, sondern gönnen ihm mal eine Auszeit.
Meet the people
Regelmäßig veranstalten wir interne Events, von Turnieren, Lunch+Learn bis PowerPoint-Karaokes. Das macht große Freude und zeigt eine tolle gelebte Firmenkultur. Aus den Erfahrungen meiner bisherigen Job, wusste ich schon, wie wichtig mir eine gute Atmosphäre am Arbeitsplatz ist. Ein positives Miteinander ist einfach eintscheidend für den Zusammenhalt, die Freude und Produktivität bei der Arbeit. Das spüren nicht zuletzt auch Kunden und Gäste, die wir häufig bei uns im Büro empfangen.
Ich bin schon heute sehr dankbar für das Miteinander. Die Bedingungen im Büro sind einfach fantastisch. Von netten Gesprächen mit meinen neuen Kollegen in der großen Küche, den kleinen Pausen beim Tischtennis oder einer starken Tasse Kaffee (wirklich stark) ist für mein Wohlergehen gesorgt. Außerdem bietet der Standort von The Information Lab die Möglichkeit seine Mittagspause in den umliegenden Cafés und Restaurants der Hamburger Neustadt zu verbringen oder einen Spaziergang durch “Planten un Blomen” zu genießen.
Die wertschätzende Atmosphäre innerhalb der Kollegen ist einfach toll. Es wird sogar darauf geachtet, dass wir während der intensiven Arbeitsphase regelmäßig Pausen einlegen. Das liebe Peoples Team hat uns am Freitag sogar mit Essen versorgt, was wir als absolut umsichtig und nicht selbstverständlich empfunden haben. Danke an dieser Stelle dafür. Wir hätten unseren Hunger beinahe vergessen. :-)
Daher mein Tipp:
Notion ist mein Tool, um mein Backlog zu schreiben. Die vielen Ideen und losen Fäden bewahre ich damit für später auf und bleibe aufnahmefähig für den stetigen Input unserer Trainer. Es ist unmöglich alles zu behalten und das ist in Ordnung. Vielmehr wird es als zukünftiger Berater eine unserer Kernkompetenzen sein, das wichtige im Auge zu behalten und dabei immer offen für neue Anforderungen und Ideen zu bleiben.
In diesem Sinne: Habt Vertrauen, dass ihr nach einer wilden Reise am Ziel ankommt.
