DSNY2 - Dashboard Week DAY 1: Accessibility!

Here we are at the end of the road, “Dashboard Week.” The first project was to make an accessibility Tableau dashboard. Ideally this dashboard would be used without a touchpad or mouse; interactive only with the keypad.

The dataset dealt with road potholes in Glasgow, UK from 2017.

With every project, I usually look at the dataset with utter confusion and dread. Although after that, I started focusing on getting areas with the same name, but different numbers are put into one category. An example of this is putting Laurieston - 01 and Laurieston - 02 into a single category called Laurieston. This was done using a calculated field, (REPLACE([Area Name],RIGHT([Area Name],5).

Then I made a parameter action that allowed the user to choose as many areas to be displayed. The big problem was that I didn't take into account that a user would require a mouse or keyboard; to navigate this. After that I connected this bar chart to a circle map. Although, the same issue as before came about. After this I’ve added directional text boxes to explain each graph.

From reading this blog, you can tell that I haven't done much from an accessibility view. Although, this was a huge opportunity to see how I could have improved this; my peers being a huge inspiration. I would’ve used a Screen Reader and used another select menu that wasn't a slider.

Overall, I really enjoyed this project. Although, I was very humbled by my terrible presentation; I learned how to work with imitations. These experiences can only enhance a consultant’s skills.
