D is for Drama

Dashboard Week

Dashboard Week can be described as five consecutive days of applying to The Data School.  Each day Data Schoolers are given a dataset with explicit directions, a few hours to prepare the data (as needed), sketch the dashboard design, create vizzies and dashboard, and present. Sometimes additional lectures are provided. Crying and gnashing of the teeth are optional.

DSNY1’s Day 4 Challenge - Use a “Breaking Bad” TV drama fan site API to retrieve tv show information.  Download, clean, and transform the data using ALteryx. Create  a dashboard in Tableau to relay  memorable show moments.

My goal for the day was not to become more proficient with APIs and create a dashboard in Tableau

Step 1.

Find and read API documentation

Step 2

Bring the URL into Alteryx

Step 3

Let’s see if all the date can be downloaded at once

Step 5

Realize your shortcut is problematic

Step 6

Commitment goes awry. The below image is me giving into sunk cost fallacy instead of returning to initial strategy.

Step 7

Bring dataset into Tableau

Step 8

Create a dummy Dashboard with no filtering because my data is broken.

Step 9

Reflection - Admit mistakes early and rectify. I took what I thought was the easier route. I know the data was not in the correct format. I could have used a single tv show category to ensure my data was accurate.
