Accessibility: Navigating a Dashboard Using Keyboard Only on the Server

On the 1st day of Dashboard week we were learning about how to make dashboards accessible for different people. To achieve full accessibility, a website should be designed to function seamlessly for individuals who use only a keyboard for navigation and interaction.

On the server, users can use the Tab button to navigate through the dashboards and interact with filters.

However, they cannot view tooltips, scroll through, or interact with charts.

When designing with this in mind, it is important to consider:

  • Clear Dashboard Layout and Instructions:
    • Arrange elements logically from left to right and top to bottom, minimizing clicks for users.
    • Include clear instructions on where to click for interaction.
  • Avoid Reliance on Tooltips:
    • Instead of hiding crucial information in tooltips, integrate it directly into charts as labels or additional visual elements.
    • Maintain visible axes and consider using Min/Max marks to convey data effectively without overcrowding charts.
