Spatials on Alteryx and Tableau

by Heinrich Preuß

Today we enjoyed the first training with Tableau visionary Andy Kriebel, covering the topic of Spatials in our two favorite tools, Tableau and Alteryx.

We visualized the bus stops in London and learned the difference between a spatial point and a spatial line. We deepened this knowledge by filtering all domestic flights in the U.S. by airline.

Then we learned how to bring two different spatial sources together by connecting them when we showed which hurricanes crossed the US. However, relationships seem to be more difficult for spatial sources, but maybe that's because we had to change the join parameter by calculating a new field.

The last thing we learned was rounded maps. In Tableau, we did this with a rounding formula and played around with the decimals. In Alteryx, we used the grid tool for that.

As a certified geographer, this is very valuable new knowledge for me, since all my previous blogs had to do with geographic data. Now I could improve my hexmap and even create it in Tableau, although I'm glad Tanya already did that. And for my Wohnungslagenregister I would need the spatial objects for every street in Hamburg. I think it's not impossible to get them, but it would be really difficult to connect them to the street areas because they are summed in a certain way in terms of even and odd house numbers. This would be so much work that I'm waiting until the city asks me to do it after seeing my current Tableau Public dashboard on this issue. It should only be a matter of days before I get the call.... :-)
