I wish I knew these 2 things before applying for The Data School

I wrote this post while listening to this song. Hit the play button and enjoy!

Today we will see how to organize your worksheets using colour-code, and how to use the Set control on Tableau.

If you could go back to the past, what would you do differently? Today we were asked by Ruth to check one of our old vizzes and update it using what we have learned so far during our Data Viz 101 sessions. I choose the viz I submitted for my application:

  1. Colour-coding your worksheets

If you are working on large dashboards, you may find yourself with many tabs, which can make it difficult to search for specific worksheets. Using a colour-code on your worksheets based on common factors such as location, time or measures can make your life a lot easier. The only thing you need to do is right-click on the worksheet you wish to change and pick one of the colour you like - as simple as that!

2. How to use Set

The second thing I would change would be creating a Set with only the swimmers in the Top 1. Simply right-click on the field you want to create a Set on, click on Create > Set... then, on the Top tab, fill in the fields as you wish.

Now it's your turn. Revisit some of your old vizzes and improve them using these new elements.

  • The song was easy to guess. It's from the classic Back to the Future (1985) - Always worth to binge-watch the trilogy! - Go back to the '80s this weekend.
  • You can check out this dashboard and others on my Tableau Public.
