Filters can be used to organize and visualize data based on predefined criteria in several ways. Sometimes in dashboards you may end up having too many filters on and a reset button can be useful to revert your dashboard back to it's original state. Here's a guide on how to create a reset filters button in Tableau.
Step 1: Create your button
To do this, open a new sheet. Create a Calculated field containing the string “Reset Filters'' and drag it onto text in the marks card. Now customise the font, size and alignment to your liking (feel free to get more creative and use shapes) and disable the tooltips.
Step 2: Build your dashboard
Add your sheets and filters to the dashboard and bring your button into the dashboard too. Where you place your button is down to personal preference but my button will be going below my filters in the filters container.
Step 3: Create a filter action
Go into dashboard actions and create a filter action. We want to configure this so that when the reset filters button is selected, all filters will return to show all values.
To do this, for source sheets have your reset button sheet checked and everything else unchecked. For your target sheet, have only the sheet(s) you want filtering selected. For filters choose ‘selected fields’ and select a source field for each of your filter options. Finally change ‘run-action on’ to select and ‘clearing the selection will’ show all values.
Your final product should work like this:
