How to make a Quadrant Chart in Tableau

A quadrant chart is a common tool used for decision making in business settings. Here’s a  quick guide on how to make a quadrant chart scatterplot in Tableau.

Step 1: Create your scatterplot

To do this, drag the measures you want to compare onto your columns (e.g. Profit Ratio), rows (e.g. Quantity) and divide your plot by a dimension of your choosing (e.g. Customer) by dragging it onto detail in the marks card.

Step 2: Create sets for your quadrants

In my case, I want to look at the top 200 customers for profit ratio and the top 100 for quantity. To create a set, right click on your measure and select create set. Now configure your condition, in this case I’m going to select the ‘Top’ tab, ‘By field’ and set it to the top 100 by quantity (repeat this step for your other measure).

Step 3: Drag both sets onto the marks card

You might find that if you try to drag each set one-by-one you’ll end up replacing them on the colour marks card. To work around this, ctrl + click both your sets and drag them onto colour. You should end up with a scatterplot looking something like this:
