How to extract data sources from Tableau Public

If you've ever opened a Tableau Workbook from Tableau Public and tried to look at the data source then you may have noticed that there's no way for you to get your hands on this data within Tableau. In this guide I will show you how to do just that.

Step 1: Download the Tableau Workbook

To do this, click the download icon in the top right of the page, select the last option 'Tableau Workbook' and click 'download'.

Step 2: Convert the workbook to a .zip

To convert the .twbx file to a .zip simply right-click the file, select rename and replace the '.twbx' with '.zip'.

Step 3: Extract the .zip

To extract the .zip, right-click it, select extract all and choose the location you wish to place the extracted files.

In the extracted folder you'll now see a folder called 'Data' and within that is a .hyper file that you can now access and use to make your own visualisations within Tableau.

If the Tableau Workbook you downloaded contains image files you'll be able to access these too.
