Generally, you should only add images to dashboards if it actually adds something to your story or insights, but on day 3 of dashboard week I couldn’t resist breaking that rule. I wanted to add an animated portal on my dashboard's landing page. I realised that when I downloaded the GIF I wanted and tried to add it to the dashboard only a static image was uploaded. Here’s a quick guide on how to add GIFs to Tableau dashboards.
Step 1: Find your GIF’s source URL
Once you’ve found a GIF you like, you’ll want to find its source URL. In this example I found a GIF of a cat on google images. Next you want to right-click on the gif and select ‘Open image in new tab’. This will take you to the source, from here you can copy the URL from the top of your browser and move on to the next step.
Step 2: Paste the URL into a Web Page Object
Open up your dashboards and make sure you have the dashboard tab selected in the top right. In the bottom left corner you should see this ‘Web Page’ object:
Drag this into the dashboard and paste your URL into the configuration window. Finally, select Ok and you should now have a working GIF in your dashboard. I hope that you found this blog useful, please use images and GIF sparingly!
