Adversity is Normal:
Adversity can be a hard pill to swallow. Many of us face scenarios in our personal and professional lives that force us to deal with adversity. Whether you face illness, loss of a loved one, abuse, bullying, job loss, financial instability, etc. The time in which to overcome adversity is unique to each person and every scenario. There is no specified amount of time and therefore no rush in recovering. When faced with adversity a good starting point I have found is to reflect on the past and plan for the future.

Adversity in the workplace:
Adversity is common in the workplace, and everyone struggles with adversity, you are not alone. I feel as some of the more common ones are emotional adversity such as the ability to handle criticism and feedback. Another is mental adversity, for instance having confidence or being able to mesh with different personalities. Lastly, social adversity could be the relationships in the office or workplace that you make and build on with other coworkers. A common instance that many professionals face especially when transferring fields is to have a feeling that you don't belong. Many know this as imposter syndrome. This can cause self sabotage, but can be combatted with positive thoughts. Reframe those negative self doubts into beliefs that reassure you belong there. Celebrate you successes no matter how small or large and track your progress so you can look back and see how far you've come. There are other forms of adversity of course, but these seem to arise in every industry and every profession.

How to handle adversity:
The key to overcoming adversity is resilience. The more you are faced with adversity the more resilient you become and the easier the process becomes of recovering. Now, most of us do not go out looking for adversity and it usually hits us when we least expect it. I found getting down on yourself is only natural and showing emotion does not make you weak, but shows you care. Because you care, use that to propel you forward and become more determined to succeed. Being able to have the mindset that I can and will instead of doubts helps build resilience when faced with adversity.
