Toby graduated from Cardiff University with a BSc in Banking and Finance with French. During his previous roles in finance and recruitment, he witnessed businesses leveraging data to automate processes and drive performance, inspiring him to pursue a career in data.
Since joining The Information Lab, Toby has completed the intensive Data School training and, most recently, a specialised Data Engineering conversion programme. His consulting engagements have allowed him to work on significant projects for clients ranging from multi-billion-pound defence corporations and the Football Association to a lead role at a royalty audit firm.
Throughout this time, Toby’s highlights include:
• Architecting End-to-End ELT Pipelines: Designing and building robust pipelines that orchestrate Python-based API extraction into AWS S3 (managed via granular IAM policies). These pipelines automate ingestion through Snowflake stages and Snowpipes, utilising dbt to transform raw data into a 'Gold layer' for actionable business insights.
• Leading Data Strategy: Serving as Data Lead for a royalty audit firm, where he architected a secure embedded analytics solution for a client-facing web portal using the Tableau Embedding API and Snowflake.
• Security & Governance: Engineering Row-Level Security (RLS) protocols within Snowflake and Tableau to ensure strict multi-tenant data isolation, critical for sensitive compliance environments.
• Infrastructure Management: Managing Snowflake environments, including cost management strategies, resource monitors, warehouse auto-suspend policies, and credit usage tracking.
• Automation & Efficiency: Automating data orchestration using Alteryx and Power Automate to bridge the gap between raw inputs and the warehouse. He also optimised SQL queries in Google BigQuery, reducing dashboard load times by 90%.
• Enablement & Training: Leading advanced Alteryx training sessions for groups of up to 100 colleagues, focusing on best practices for Alteryx Server automation and error handling.
• Impactful Analytics: Building Tableau dashboards that drive decisions, such as a recruitment analysis tool for The FA that led to 5 new scouted players in its first week of release.
Outside the office, he enjoys cooking, music, and wondering if he'll ever break 90 on the golf course.
