Matty joined the Data School after graduating with a Maths degree from the University of Leeds where he was introduced to his first computer visualisations. The first memorable thing he coded was a Julia set, a type of fractal pattern that one needs a computer to see, and was struck by the possibility of combining mathematical and computational techniques to create work that could be done by neither field alone. After this he was hooked, and went on to create animations of planets in orbit and pendula in motion for his final year project. From here it wasn’t a big leap into data visualisation.
