Matthias Albert

Matthias studied Systematic Musicology at the University of Hamburg, where he focused on quantitative models of auditory perception. For his master's thesis, he applied multidimensional scaling to inform a timbre perception model and graduated with honors. In the course of this work he developed an interest in working with data and programming, so he went on to substantiate his understanding of these topics by passing several certified programs covering Python, Data Science and Machine Learning at MITx and the University of San Diego.

Before diving into Tableau and Alteryx at the Data School, he has been a proficient contributor to the open source landscape, writing Python scripts for data mining and programmatic fetching from APIs, also touching on Web3 protocols and querying blockchain data. Most recently before joining the Data School, he had designed and maintained a tweet mining solution quantifying engagement metrics of target audiences for a Web3 protocol, which to this day is regularly querying Twitter and appending to the database without fail.

Away from the screen he is passionate about many things, but above all music, which he enjoys listening to as well as performing with his band.

UK Mobile Network Operator (Placement 5)

  • Analytics Engineer: Built & extended production dbt pipelines on GCP BigQuery.

  • Authored layered incremental models (partitioned & clustered), converting reporting views to tables and following established backfill/partitioning conventions.

  • Big data: Ran source exploration & diagnostics across petabyte-scale tables, surfacing and documenting upstream data-quality issues while applying strict BigQuery cost discipline.

  • Drove changes through an end-to-end, dev-owned code-promotion workflow across a two-repo dbt codebase, version-controlled via GitLab - feature branches, merge requests, environment promotion, cross-repo cherry-picks.

Tech Stack: dbt [Cloud], GCP BigQuery, VSCode, GitLab CI/CD, Airflow, Tableau, Jira, Git Bash.

International Fashion Retailer (Placement 4)

  • Served as Alteryx developer and technical lead on automated inventory calculation and approval system for retail supply chain optimization.

  • Architected end-to-end solution integrating Teradata, Google Analytics 4 API, and SharePoint Online processing 7,500+ items daily.

  • Engineered Python solution for batch upserting to SharePoint Lists, enabling scalable approval workflows.

  • Owned solution design documentation and served as technical liaison between development team, BA/PM, and senior client stakeholders.

Tech Stack: Alteryx Designer & Server, Python, Teradata SQL, Azure SQL, GA4 API, SharePoint Online.

Energy Supplier & Infrastructure Provider (Placements 2 & 3)

  • Reverse-engineered, streamlined & automated complex Excel macros using Tableau Prep.

  • Established a multitude of data sources & dashboards for grid monitoring, management & growth.

  • Optimized a suite of slow dashboards by setting up new & optimized data sources on Tableau Server using Tableau Prep.

  • Made use of sparse querying using custom SQL to avoid full table scans where possible.

Sensor Intelligence Provider (Placement 1)

  • Automated monthly time slip data collection for the Controlling department. Set up multiple dashboards for the exploration of different time types according to complex logic in extensive Tableau Prep Flows.

  • Created various datasources from the ground & set up for scheduled execution.

  • Controlling: Replaced error-prone Excel-based processes with more performant, secure and scalable solutions using scheduled Tableau Prep Flows & Tableau Server data sources.
