The Survivor Data! (Day 5)

by Kinley Ly

On Day 5 of Dashboard week, we play with data from the Survivor TV Show. Fun Fact, this dataset was actually the same dataset that DSNY 3 was given for their final interview. Having already been given clean data is really a nice change from the other days, ESPECIALLY day 4 with the candy data.

The data contained the names of all of the contestants for their relative seasons. Each of them had categories and statistics for their respective seasons.

Data for contestant includes:

  • Full name
  • Season
  • Age
  • City and State of each resident
  • Their result in the season
  • Gender
  • Race
  • Occupation
  • Personality Type

The data also contained statistics for the season, which includes:

  • Season Location
  • Filming Start and End dates
  • Airing Start and End Dates
  • Season Winner and runner-ups
  • Tribal setup
  • Season Number and Name
  • And More..

With this much data, there was no shortage of insights to find in Tableau.

Firstly, I wanted to somehow include parameter buttons into the dataset. I wanted to increase the amount of interactivity for the dashboard. I also saw map data that I wanted to include as well.

The dashboard formulated in my head was going to be where there would be an overview dashboard that features more general information about Survivor. It would have contestant highlights, such as survivors with most wins, the most frequent survivor, the amount of contestants, and much more. The overview dash would also show a map that showed where each season’s location was.

Next, the overview dashboard would then have a navigation button to another dashboard with more detailed information for a specific season. Due to time constraints, I only limited the amount to 10 different seasons. This dashboard will have more detailed information about a selected season, that includes the location, participants, gender and age ratios, and who was in first and last place. This dashboard would also use the parameter buttons I had mentioned earlier so the data would be dynamic and freely changeable.
